Backend platform (pgapi)

Supabase-compatible database, auth, file and realtime infrastructure.

U02–U04 · Infrastructure · Infrastructure

pgapi is a multi-project, Supabase-compatible backend platform that we run on our own server. Every project gets its own PostgreSQL database, authentication, REST and GraphQL API, file storage, realtime channels and an Edge Functions layer.

Nothing changes on the application side: Supabase’s official client libraries work as they are with the project URL. The difference is the team behind the infrastructure that built it and watches it. The applications we build run on this platform too.

The platform comes with an admin panel, a command line tool, migrations, TypeScript type generation and backups. With pg_cron and pg_net, scheduled jobs and HTTP calls from the database are written with the same SQL API.

What gets built

  1. 01A separate PostgreSQL 18 database, roles and row level security (RLS) per project
  2. 02Auth: email/password, magic links, OTP, OAuth providers, anonymous sign-in and MFA
  3. 03Automatic REST (PostgREST) and GraphQL (pg_graphql) APIs
  4. 04Storage: public and private buckets, signed URLs, image transforms, resumable uploads
  5. 05Realtime: table changes, broadcast and presence
  6. 06Edge Functions (Deno), scheduled jobs with pg_cron, HTTP from the database with pg_net
  7. 07Admin panel, command line tool, migrations, TypeScript type generation and backups

Frequently asked

Do the Supabase client libraries work unchanged?

Yes. Official clients such as supabase-js and supabase_flutter only need the project URL and key; auth, database, storage, realtime and function calls use the same API.

Where does our data live?

On a server our team runs, with every project separated into its own database and roles. PostgreSQL connections require TLS; service keys and the database URL are used on the server side only.

Can we move an existing Supabase project?

Schemas and migration files work the same way, so a move is a database dump plus a file transfer. We scope it together for your project.
